Fantastic educational tool for young and old drummers
We have had V-Drums Tutor for several months now, and love it. We have an older Roland TD-6SXT kit and had no problems configuring the software. Our kit does require a traditional midi cable and interface which we already were using with the set. Newer kits with the USB interface should be a breeze to setup. My 9 year old daughter improved in the first 15 minutes of use. She immediately understood the user interface and timing metaphor, allowing her to focus on coordination and not the software. I use it too. I like the fact I can put headphones on and work on basic skills. The software graphically displays how well you are doing by evaluating well timed hits to those that are off. It is addictive.Does require a computer close by. We have a laptop on a half wall next to the kit, so no big deal for us. Could be an issue for some though.Well worth the cost of the product. Compared to other drum lessons it a no brainer.

Used it for Beginner Skills and now Intermediate 5 years later. 3.25 stars
5 stars for the concept and execution of the software. There is not anything else like it that works so well, with the rolling sheet music interface, tempo changes, and dynamics grading to help even out snare skills. Allows the import of midi files that you can produce yourself , so you can play along with song that you can type in with MuseScore.-1 star for Roland abandoning it as a 32 bit app that will only run on OS X up to 10.14. I can't upgrade my OS, so I had to dedicate a keep a Mac obsolete to keep using the software, but again, there is nothing else like it.-0.25 star for such a small screen GUI, no grading for 16th note triplets or 32nd notes, and only quarter note metronome.-0.5 for Roland now pushing the subscription service Melodics as a replacement. I have evaluated it, and it is not good.

Japanese box and instructions - but software is in English
There are several 1-star reviews complaining that the software was the Japanese version and couldn't be installed. My version was also printed in Japanese - but once you load the DVD the install instructions were all in English and the software works great. No need to send it back just because the box is printed in Japanese! But it takes a while to find the right # on the Japanese instructions to enter as the serial number - just keep trying one will work eventually. And the software itself is awesome! Yeah I wish the window were scalable to full screen, but the way the software gives timing feedback for each note is great! You are buying an effective learning tool not a visually slick program. I can already feel my brain learning how to subdivide into four separate parts, and I am not a coordinated person. This program works!

Overpriced, dated software but still functional
This product is really dated at this point. I am running it on my mac, and functionally / aesthetically it is out of place. The included "songs" that you can play along with are super cheesy. I was hoping to find something like Rocksmith for drums but, sadly, this is the closest I could find. Pretty disappointing compared to Rocksmith.A functional gripe: I cannot resize the application window at all; it is a fixed size. My iMac has a beautiful high resolution display, and this application appears as a tiny window. The only way I can enlarge the application enough to see it while playing the drums is to downgrade the resolution of my monitor. Annoying. This is a product from several years ago that has not received any attention since then. Keep that in mind when you choose whether or not to buy.

This is a great value for beginners! Worked with Alesis. Only packaging is Japanese, not product.
Honestly I don't know why this product has so many negative reviews. If you're a beginner like I am, the lessons with this software will keep you busy for months, I believe. The software comes only on CD ROM. It's worth the trouble to get it on your computer. I see USB external CD/DVD drives here on Amazon for $23 USD, so even the cost of the software and CD player is cost effective, still less than $100 USD, only once. For some reason, Roland chose to not make the software go into full screen mode. OK, fine...if you decrease the acuity of your display, you can make the software show up as very close to full screen, as you can see in the picture I posted. That is a 21" monitor.AFAIK, after you install the software on your hard drive, you don't need to have the CD installed any longer. I copied the Quick Start Guide and the User Manual to my hard drive, and I think that's the only reason you would need the CD...if you were to click on the Help menu.I had an Alesis Surge DM7X set, and the software "saw" it, and it probably would have worked, but I returned the Alesis kit and bought a Roland Edrum set......but for either one it's important to note that this software does not produce drum sounds. It relies on your drum's sound module to produce sounds. The software only tells you if you're hitting the correct drum at the correct time, which is what you want. So I have mine set for the output from the software to go through the drum kit, and wear headphones connected to the drum sound module. It's great, seriously. The display can be set for music notation, or it can do a Guitar Hero type display. Either way, it grades your performance to let you know how you're doing. You DO NOT need to buy that "Roland MIDI-USB cable" if your drum module has a "USB Out" port. It connects by USB to your PC.I would say it's worth buying this software, and if it doesn't work with your drum module, then you can return it.The Serial Number is on the back of the paper manual (which is in Japanese) in the front of the software package. You'll need the serial number to install the software. Enjoy!

Excellent Drum training
Been using this software for 3 months now and still very happy with it. The included practice track and songs seem simple but to play them accurately (in time) is challenging. Also I can edit the songs (external software) since they are .mid files and customize them to my particular weaknesses. The DT-1 also lets you load in your own .mid files so you can play and practice that way as well. I have it connected to my Roland TD-8 and although not listed, it works perfectly with it .. even recognized my drum on Aux channel 11/12.

Mac

Great fun
Thought I'd try this software, even though I don't have a Roland drumkit. Turns out, it works fine with the Alesis DM6 electronic kit (as long as you change the pattern on the Alesis to "__N").The software works well on my ageing laptop (Vista), and has some nice easy tracks to play along to. Great for a beginner like myself. One gripe, is the software doesn't scale on the screen! You can't maximise the window to make the contents bigger. That means on a high-def laptop, you'll need to set the resolution to 1024x768 to get a sizable score. It's a pain, but an easy workaround. The best part for me, is in addition to the included songs & practise exercises, you can load ANY midi file into the software. If the file has a drum component, it's annotated on the screen, and you can play it. The software gives you graphical feedback on the score as you hit or miss beats.
