Casein is fabulous paint !
I love the Jack Richeson casein paint in tubes . The colors are rich and deep and dry to a luxurious mat surface . They are milk based and clean up is easy .

casein paint
We enjoy painting with casein paint in that it is very different sort of a feel, similar to oil paint, but dries very fast, and becomes permanent with time.Cleans up with soap and water.

Casein used best for underpainting for oil if my experience
After using Casein a little I have decided to only use it for plein air paintouts because its too smelly in my small apartment. And the emulsion medium is extremely stinky. Still, time will tell how the paintings turn out and how they last and yellow or not. Casein is not supposed to yellow so thats a plus. And they are more expensive or the same price as oils which do vary but thats a consideration. Oil must be used over a landscape painting for ex as casein dries matt and flat.

stinky but nice
I have never made casein paints from scratch but was curious so I bought these. They are very matt and dry very quickly. But they reconstitute so you can work back into them. They are their own animal--unlike other types of paint. You can use water spray to extend the open time. Without having used other brands (I think only other brand is by the German company, Pelikan), I can't comment on their quality as a casein paint. However, I can say they are interesting to work with and the only downside is that they have a strong odor--such as ammonia or something similar. It's too bad they can't find a compatible chemical substitute. The benefit of this over mixing your own is that homemade casein paints have a very short life and these will last a long time.
