Q: How exactly does it stop leaks? What supports their claim to stop leaks?

This stop leak product does NOT work by "scabbing" when it's exposed to air. You don't really want to use those types of stop leak products, because half the time they "scab" inside the A/C system and gum it up. This product contains methylene chloride. In large quantities this chemical is used as a paint stripper. In small quantities it softens leaky, hardened O-rings, causing them to "flow" a bit and seal if they're leaking.

Q: I have a 2005 honda pilot and never ever recharged my a/c. Does Freon get used up after 11 yrs or could there be a leak?

No Freon means a leak at some place in system. Best practice is to get an AC service each year, modern machines vacuum out system and check it for leaks, then replace old Freon and with some new Freon tell you how low system was. Regular service also helps the system last/work better and longer. At some point most all systems will have one or more items fail. On an 05 Toyota Sienna when the front evap coil fails its a big job as you must buy the entire evap case, R & R entire dash to replace old case. online the part alone was $1100 best price I could find.
