Q: Are they really made of cheap plastic?

We used to use Pick Up Sticks in the tube when we were little. They are wood, so much stronger.

Q: Is this the original version or the smaller version?

This one is about 15" high. They make more challeng versions than this, too. I bought this for my nieces who are 11 and 13. They had never played it before and eventhough they were older, they had a blast!

Q: Is there a trick to putting all of the sticks in? My grandson loves the game but quickly loses interest because it's so hard to get the sticks in!

My 5 year old will insert about 50% of the sticks and then I have to complete the last ones because he gets frustrated and gives up. I too, get a little aggravated as it is definitely a tedious task for such a “quick” game. However, we love playing this game together and end up laughing at each other as we lose our marbles. In the end, it is worth the task.
