Q: Is this a real clock or just decorative?

It's a real clock. The center part with the dials actually pops out so you can put a battery in. It does make a 'tick tock' sound sort of like a grandfather clock (but less loud of course), however I find it very comforting. It's even prettier in person - I LOVE it!

Q: Is the clock face paper or metal? Could it be engraved or have a plaque adhered to it? What is the diameter of the face?

It is made of resaion ( like light wood ) very nice clock looks great , you could have made a very small plaque using a 3- m adheasive

Q: What does the back of the clock look like?

The back of the clock is the same antique gold finish but it is smooth.
