Yes, this does indeed come off of the stand. This is a smaller plane. If you want a more substantial plane, go for a 1:200 scale model (this one is a 1:400 scale) . I've shifted to them for my 5 year old when he was still 4 years old and he loves them; you can find them for a little more than the smaller planes.
