Good for SMALL kitchen herb plants; get a deeper planter to grow more basil for that pesto.
This planter has a more shallow area for the soil and roots than I expected. The planting pot ends just above water “window,” meaning that it’s not much deeper than the little pots that the herbs come in from garden center. I think that the watering system will work & I’ll trim often and re-root the herb plants to fill up the planter with tiny plants for cooking. Don’t think they’ll grow very high. For regular houseplants or greater quantities of herbs from your small plants, I’d get a set with a deeper interior pot.

Lightweight, easy to use, and maintain
These are very easy to assemble and use. It comes in 3 pieces. Inner container with drainage holes (colored), outer container (cream), and a strip of cloth per planter. To assemble, just put the cloth through the drainage holes and fill up the planter as you normally would and add water. They are narrow so you can put them horizontally to see more, or if you don't have space, stack them and they are pretty compact.I've used them for chives, other herbs, and lettuce and they are really happy in there and I only water once a week normally and twice a week when there is a heat wave. The containers are small, so measure what you want to plant in them beforehand. Herbs are fine. The lettuce was too big/planter too small.Over time, the dirt gets out of the inner container and so the interior of the outer container starts to look dirty and fogs up with screen where you see water levels. I use a towel and wipe/rinse that out every few months. And when the plants get larger, the roots wrap around the strip of cloth too, so transferring is more work, but the planter is still effective.

Great Idea — Effectiveness Depends on Location
3 stars of 5 — cannot recommend for self-wateringThe best thing about these is that they are a good size for 2-3 herbs and small enough that they can be moved easily and will fit just about any windowsill.Unfortunately the self-watering aspect depends too much on location. Depending on conditions (heat, humidity, sunlight, size of windows, and more)... the soil might dry too quickly for the wick to work, or never really dry at all. That leaves time for the reservoir to build up mold or start to smell.Instead, I've been using these for two purposes:(1) as holders for 2" pots, giving small plans/seedlings time to get acclimated, before putting them in a real pot.(2) as normal window-boxes, without making use of the self-watering, i.e. allowing the soil to dry and adding water as needed.I've lived in places where these containers probably would work, but they definitely don't here.

Small sizes
Note the size when ordering. The interior of these planters is about right to hold an average 16 ounce water bottle, pictured here for reference.

Great small planters.
Very good little planter boxes and with a couple small tweaks I think they could be excellent.First of all I would like the fill indicator on opposite corners instead of just one corner. That way when you rotate the boxes you would be able to see how full the water is. For example in our kitchen where we keep these to grow herbs we rotate so that the plants do not grow in one direction. The other small tweak I would make would be to make the fill hole slightly larger to make filling easier.I definitely recommend these.
