The Christmas Tree

The sort of book parents would read to their children
Having added this book to my book list, I was unable to find it for many years. The Christmas Tree was first written in 1996. I am fortunate to have found this twentieth-anniversary edition for Kindle. The author says she was hoping to write a story that adults and children would enjoy. So this is not a book written specifically for early readers. But it works very well as the sort of book parents might read to their children. The head gardener at Rockefeller Center in New York has the job of finding the perfect Christmas tree every year. One year he heard about a tree at a convent in the prettiest part of New Jersey and went out to take a look at it. It was a very good tree, but one of the nuns was particularly attached to it and wasn’t ready to let it go yet. She told the gardener the story of how she first came to the convent as a child and befriended the tree when it was a sapling. The gardener made it a point to not come between people and their trees, so he abandoned the idea of that tree for that year, but he became friends with the nun, and over a period of several years, he heard more of her story and in a way became part of the story.

My favorite Christmas novella
The story of the Rockefeller Center Christmas tree as told from the chief gardener's perspective. Very sweet and charming short book. It was made into a Hallmark TV movie years ago with Julie Harris. Have your kleenex handy - you'll need it!Very interesting and a wonderful good-read for Christmas time! Highly recommend this endearing story.

Deep and abiding!
This little book takes you on a journey from the roots of a tree to its final glory. It makes you realize how many different ways a tree is important in our every day lives that we barely even think about. The beauty in the fabric of this special story is palpable. A must read this holiday season. Thank you Julie for opening my eyes to the wonder that Christmas always was as a child.

Beautiful, spellbinding book
A beautiful story at a lot of levels. Very well told. Not long, easily read in one sitting and probably best read that way. Read this book. I’m 67 and read it today; I think children would love it as well, although it is not particularly a children’s book.

Wonderful Christmas Story
When this book was selected as our clubs Christmas book I was surprised how short it was. Generally our monthly books are much more complex and lengthy. I was amazed at the meaningful story contained in those few pages. This is an amazing story of a lonely child’s triumphant achievement and strength. The power of love in her life was stunning. Quick pleasant read that will take you on a pleasant journey.

Beautiful
This is not a long story. Its perfect for adults and kids. It's about saying goodbye but in The end we see that letting go is sometimes the right thing to do. Its also about friendships. An absolutely beautiful story and the illustrations are wonderful and truly enhance the story. This is a must read over the holidays.

A story to melt even an iron heart.
This beautiful story is about an elderly nun and the gardener of the Rockefeller Centre in New York, who is scouting for the centre's next tree. The gardener, Richard, spots the tree in a nunnery and tries to persuade the nuns to sell it to him. But first he has to get past Sister Anthony, who refuses to sell it, as she has lived with "Tree" (as she calls it) from the time that she was taken from an orphanage at the age of 6. A remarkable friendship develops between nun and gardener; and she helps Richard get through some of his personal problems. As she does so, lost memories of her childhood begin to resurface. I can recommend this book to anyone with an eye for beauty. It was also made into a lovely film in 1996.

Lovely Story
A lovely story, really would recommend for adults and older children. Some many meaning in the story. Loss, Grief, confidence new beginnings, friendship and letting go. A Joy to Read. Also easy to read so, I think you could read it anywhere. As in or on public transport. Buy Enjoy and Treasure. I will read this every year.
