Yosuke's family has a strange tradition - once every sixty years they receive an egg from a mermaid. When the egg matures his family dutifully returns it to the sea, where the whole process is then repeated. In exchange for this favor, the mer-people bless his coastal town with bountiful catches of fish and calm seas. But as a commercial development encroach on the sleepy seaside village and Yosuke's father is lured away from tradition towards modern prosperity, and turns the egg into a tourist trap, what will happen to the promise their family made to the mermaids generations ago? Tropic of the Sea Satoshi Kon's first feature length manga, includes a dozen black and white art plates from his original release, along with a 5-page essay written by Kon in 1999 detailing his transition from the manga industry to the animation business. Review: very interesting story - Great to see this story from Satoshi Kon! very interesting. Delivery was good too (unlike other desertcart books I've had delivered) Review: A good quick read - The book came in perfect unread contain. The contents of the book itself are pretty good as well. I finished the book in one sitting, and as the story tied up all of its loose ends it did leave a tiny little bit to be desired. It’s still a great addition to a manga collection

A brief visit to the early work of a master
Director Satoshi Kon's untimely death squelched so much potential for the artform and so we are left to sift through the ashes of his brief but compelling career. This manga, from the early 1990s, is enjoyable and atmospheric but doesn't have enough space to deliver a full-blown story of the scope we usually enjoy from Kon's work. If you are fan, then this will add something valuable to your understanding of his work but, for now, his feature films and lone venture into television (Paranoia Agent) remain the go-to.

I felt sad as Satoshi is gone, he was truly talented in telling stories. The island, the sea, are so beautiful

The art, the paneling, so clear so simple. The whole story just flows through, so glad I read this.

Very nice read!
Satoshi Kon really worked hard on this so the least that we can do is appreciate his work by having this on our bookshelves. Both the art and story are very immersive. Had a peaceful feeling while reading it.
