Side Effects: How Our Healthcare Lost its Way – And How We Fix it

Brilliant analysis of healthcare
This is a book that all politicians should read. It asks searching questions about healthcare provision and how demand is outstripping supply. It does not pull punches about the damage of austerity and government underfunding of the NHS ( forcing one in ten people to go into debt, take out loans or raid savings in order to access private provision- arguably the Conservative strategy on the sly). The book also looks at how ‘specialisms’ especially in hospitals can be problematic especially for patients with multiple conditions. It also provides detailed analysis of pharmaceutical companies and how they are often driven by profit rather than ethical values. It is written engagingly and clearly by someone who has been a GP for many years and also operated at a senior level in national organisations. Highly recommended- read it!

We can’t have it all
An eloquent summary of what healthcare can deliver….and what it can’t.Global issues that need global solutions mixed with personal choices and intimate discussions that people need to have with their families and their healthcare providers.Essential reading.

Scary and totally trustworthy
David Haslam knows exactly what he’s talking about. He's long on diagnosis and suitably provocative to all of us to help find solutions… or suffer the consequences. A gem.

Ultimately disappointing
A self regarding book which adds little to what is already known in this field.
