Expensive. Probably worth it?
I got a RAV4 Prime and wanted to set it up for car camping. I really like the Yakima EXO system because it allows me to mix and match to fit the outing that you are wanting to do. I really want to be able to take it to any spot, and just set up camp. When it comes to cooking, I wanted to be able to cook a nice meal (not simply hot dogs and burgers), so I needed to have a substantial set up to accommodate a variety of types of meals. Enter the the OpenRange Deluxe. This is expensive. I'd probably argue that it's too expensive, particularly when you consider it does not come with the stand that allows you to set it up off of the rack system.I ultimately decided on this as opposed to the non-deluxe version because I wanted all of the extras - tables, sink, stove, etc. The result is that it gives a large prep area and cavity to put stuff. Large in some regards but small in others. For my camp kitchen, I have a four-person plate and silverware set, complete cooking utensils (spatula, spoons, ladle, tongs, etc.), large pots, and a cast-iron pan. In addition, I have a couple of spice shakers, a few different bottles for oils and soap, a lantern, and a propane tank for the stove. I can get all of this, plus a paper towel roll into the OpenRange. The only thing that I cannot get in there is the stand. Little bummed about that, but it has it's own case, so no big deal.I can set this up on my own, but all of that is pretty heavy. Best for a two person to get it on a stand. But fully set up, it's pretty great. It has lots of prep area (just have to be careful of the lid since it's not supposed to have much weight on it). I like that I can close it up and lock it up. Great for curious critters who want to get into your food.Other than the cost, the only other complaint I have is that the metal table that the stove sits on does not fit in the OpenRange. It comes with its own case, so it's not a huge deal, but I would think/hope that this could be a full self-contained unit. If it did, I might move things around, but it is what it is.One addition that I might add to the kit, but could easily be included is a level. I had to eyeball that the stand and tables were level when I used it, but it'd be nice if a level was included (or built in). It'd be a small quality of life addition to this.It might not be an option for many due to the cost, but if you want a serious camp kitchen, it's hard to find anything better than this. I'd definitely recommend it if you can afford it.
