Works well, lacks a backlight function but data is saved until reset
I use this device to identify the power usage of various clusters of equipment around the home, and so the kWh reading is the only one I am interested in. As others have pointed out, many of us have dual rate tariffs so trying to set the meter up to give an accurate cost is always going to be a compromise. The meter is easily installed (factory reset then just plug and go). Reading the display is frequently problematic as it is usually located at or near floor level and there is no backlight, so I have to remove it and plug into a socket at a more convenient height in order to read the display. I dock it one star for this. Fortunately, the display data remains in memory so when the meter is returned to its original site it continues collecting data from where it left off. Alternatively the data stored can be reset to zero. What I discovered was that over a month my tv/video equipment uses 12 kWh, my security system ( 8 cameras and a DVR) uses 6 kWh and my IT equipment (routers and NAS) 5 kWh.What I do about this is yet to be determined, but using Alexa or Hive devices to cut power when it is not wanted seems like a plan. At present the quiescent current drain in my house is a little wasteful!!

Energy Meter Uk Plug
The media could not be loaded. Ths is simple live energy meter, despite having no backlight the display is good quality and fairly large which makes reading easy from any angle even in the poorly lit space. There is just enough space behind the meter for you to turn on the socket. For some reason i like the way it feels, the quality and design made me buy x2 of them, i hope they last.... only time will tell.

Brilliant ! Simple to set up and gives a good indication of the cost of your appliances
The media could not be loaded. I was initially concerned that this unit would be complicated to operate, and you’d need to be a qualified electrician to use it. However, with energy prices so high, I decided to give it a try.I was certainly wrong about setting it up – it couldn’t have been simpler, and if I can do it, anyone can ! You simply press the SET button, key in your unit price, press the SET button again to lock it in, and away you go !You can then plug in any electrical appliance, and it will tell you the cost by hour, day, week or year. For my short video I tested it out on the electric kettle. I placed 3 mugs of cold water into the kettle and allowed it boil and automatically switch off. The HBN energy monitor told me it had cost £0.03 pence to boil the kettle, which would be 0.37 pence per hour, £9.00 per day, £63.00 per week, £270.00 per month and £3,285.00 per year !! Obviously the kettle isn’t going to be on for that length of time, and knowing it was only 3 pence to make a brew for three people was quite reassuring. So despite the energy crisis, there’s no need to cut out the brews just yet !!I am now itching to try it out on other pieces of electrical equipment around the home. I feel this device will definitely come into its own in the Winter when we are tempted to switch on fires/electric blankets in order to keep warm. Depending on the readings, my hubby’s heated foot warmer may be “disappearing” sooner rather than later – we shall see !! Obviously he won’t be seeing the readings for my heated clothes airer !!I can definitely recommend the HBN energy monitor plug for ease of use, and for keeping an eye on the cost of potential energy hungry products in the home helping to minimise bills. The display is clear, and the plug itself appears well made and is CE approved.Thank you for reading and I hope my review has proved helpful.

Great little device to assess individual appliance energy usage, but only one tariff rate setting
This is a relatively inexpensive plug for monitoring your usage for single appliances. I liked the idea that I could rotate the use of this throughout different appliances in my home (rather than using our global smart meter) to really understand the wattage being used by each item in my home. The plug is very lightweight and made of standard white ABS plastic, which mirrors standard wall socket in terms of look and feel. The plug is very easy to install and is simply placed into any wall socket and then the chosen appliance plugged into the unit accordingly. Power to the device is provided by the wall socket (rated 13A). The instructions are okay to understand, but you may need to do a bit of your own research if you are not familiar with some of the settings you can switch between, such as a KWh or Power Frequency units etc. The buttons provide easy navigation to switch between the different units. The one downside is I couldn’t see how you can provide a time-based tariff, rather just a one off cost that can be used to provide you with the cost for running any given device. We have a cheaper overnight tariff so it would have been good if this could have been accommodated. I did however like the data storage feature, whereby you can understand your usage over longer periods of time rather than just currently.

Useful way to monitor household energy usage
This is a very cheap and useful power consumption meter. With power costing so much it is essential to know which devices and which modes of devices use least and most energy. It led to some surprising conclusions, for instance that the eco setting of our dishwasher was 20% more costly than the quick wash, that increasing the fridge temperature from 3 C to 6 C made virtually no difference, that there is about 50% overhead on the nominal power usage of our microwave (i.e. 1 kW heating power uses 1.44 kW and 600 W uses about 1.1 kW), and that our network storage uses about 17 kWhr/month (so we now switch off when not using).I've not done comparisons with standard meters, but it seems to be reasonably accurate, comparable to estimates I'd made earlier with our energy provider's meter. It would be even better had it an illuminated display, an easier means of resetting (you need to find a toothpick or similar to reset) and another decimal point in the kWhr reading (it only reads to the nearest 0.01 kWhr - for devices with constant energy consumption it'd be useful to get accurate estimates of usage in shorter times). But at this cost (£12.99 at the time of writing). you can't go wrong. Very useful and fun!
