easy to use, works fine
i prefer the old smartkey tool due to its length vs my fat fingers, the new kits have the oval plastic housing and the small 1/3 section has the tool in it. the old one is much easier to hang onto but the new tool does work.make sure to poke straight in the hole after the key is turned a quarter turn clockwise, listen or feel for the click, turn the key back upright, put in the new key, turn it, listen/feel the new click and you're done. that's it. rinse and repeat. i just rekeyed 4 locks in about 2 minutes and that's only because i had to walk across the house from one door to the other. It takes longer to overcome the plastic bubble packaging than to rekey the door locks.I lost a set of keys so rekeyed the door locks with this kit and ordered another for next time. I used the 4 silver keys and didnt need to use the gold keys just yet. the gold keys are a different key pattern.this saved a ton of time and money vs calling a locksmith or having keys cut. home door locks are crap anyways, almost all are grade 2 or 3 and can be overcome with a bump key or prybar so Im very happy that these kits are still around.

Great keys, instructions and suchβ¦
Not sure of the use for the alternate keys. Would literally have to reprogram to use them and then program them back to the main set. Seems a bit pointless.

Very useful but tricky to use
I used this kit to replace the key on my entry door. The learning tool feels clumsy. I failed to properly program the lock twice, and it was very hard to find the βwrongβ position of the key. I had to push the learning tool really hard while doing the process, but since it is very close to the key, it feels very uncomfortable to use, and I consider myself an agile person with tools. Still, I managed to replace the key and itβs working great.

The sense of this product is: Should you ever lose an original (or a matching copy of the) key to your door, where a stranger could easily see which door it belongs to, you would not have to replace the entire lock or the key cylinder. A supplied "tool" in this kit lets you switch from the original keys that came with the lock, to the substitute keys included in this kit, like switching from winter to summer tires. The re-programming is triggered by a small tool that is inserted into a tiny hole next to the key-hole. It causes the lock to accept a key with a different cutout profile. To be clear, you must own a key matching the original. So, unless losing a key creates a security risk, it would save time to just make another copy.I followed the printed instructions perfectly. The result was: it locked the key cylinder in a vertical position, preventing any key from rotating left or right. The Weiser website indicates this is a common problem, generally caused by someone not inserting the replacement key (from the kit) all the way into the cylinder, or perhaps too far-in, causing the software to record a key profile that is only partial. So, the website asks you to move the key back and forth in the lock to get the cylinder to recognize the profile it has on record, and hopefully rotate.Well that didn't work, I believe owing to the fact that I followed the instructions to a tee, having read them clearly several times before trying this "simple and easy" process.Locking the cylinder so that it cannot rotate is very dangerous, in cases where the lock batteries (4 x AA) are completely dead. Some Weiser locks have a narrow operating temperature range, which could leave you locked-out in extreme weather. Even if your Weiser door lock is connected by Bluetooth to a Home Security network, dead batteries will leave you with no option but a physical key -- which ain't working.
