Excellent 40k novel
I liked the story, it did an excellent job of humanizing Dante and telling his story. The narration was excellent.

Another great piece of 40K lore!
This story was fun as it bounced back and forth between Dante’s path to chapter master and the “modern” storyline taking place before the fall of Cadia. Compelling story, great protagonist, a worthwhile venture into the 40K universe.

My first Warhammer experience
This was my first venture into Warhammer. I’ve read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi. I enjoyed this story. There was a lot of things I had no idea what they were talking about. All kinds of weapons and vehicles that I couldn’t really picture just from the names. The story painted a great picture though and I like how the story went through Dante’s life. I can’t say it really pulled me into more Warhammer, but it gave me an interest into exploring it a little more.

Incredibly entertaining!
Guy Haley at his finest! This is an amazing novel and does a great job of providing a comprehensive backstory for and fleshing out the character of Dante. A must read before The Devastation of Baal!

Fantastic Work
Giving life to the early years of one of the most well-known Blood Angels, this makes for an incredible read. Guy has panache for writing the character as he deserves to be written. A Marine, a hero, a man.

awesome story of the blood angles
It can be a bit slow start to start. However it picks up the the pace and is a fascinating look at a great chapter. I like how it connects a bit to modern space marines stories. I look forward to reading the next one.

Blood Angels fans are going to love it
Fans of Jim Swallow’s Blood Angels stories will find a lot to like here. Guy Haley has written a profile of Dante, Chapter Master of the Blood Angels, that deftly weaves two plot strands together into one intertwining narrative. The first part of the story follows him from childhood, through the trials of becoming a Space Marine, and then his ascent through the ranks. The second is a present-day 40K story of a much older, world-weary Dante, struggling to fend off a giant Tyranid invasion of Imperial space. We get to see Dante at both ends of his life, making the novel a contrasting series of vignettes from battles on many worlds. It’s an entertaining read that answers some questions while still leaving others up in the air awaiting a resolution in future books. Well worth picking up.

Different, in a good way
So many of the space marine-centric stories are so “shootey”, which is kinda mind numbing. Although this book has a fair bit of bolter and battle action, it’s really the backstory of Dante’s youth and process of becoming a Blood Angel that is most enthralling. This is my 11th Warhammer 40k/30K book, so I haven’t gotten to hear much detail about how a person actually becomes a space marine. This book covers a lot of that, and in a manner that creates interest in the characters. A good read for sure.
