Love & Basketball

One of the best from the heyday of black love films
The late 1990s/early 2000s were the heyday of black romances. Love & Basketball was one of them and featured a plethora of young African American actors like Omar Epps, Sanaa Lathan, Regina Hall, and Gabrielle Union. The story is about the relationship between Epps and Lathan. It goes from middle school to high school to college and afterward. That’s just as important as the basketball which is done quite well. Epps and Lathan seem natural in their roles. They go through the ups and downs of a relationship which is good because that means it isn’t boy meets girl and once they’re together that’s it. It gives the story a more realistic feel.

~Who hasn't had a childhood with these themes?~
Aside from basketball, or maybe even sports period, as children, we can all remember that first time when that little girl or for the ladies, that little boy, caught our attention. 2nd grade, Bragg Street Elementary. This wasn't Love & Basketball, this was Me & Cozy Corner Tee-Pee. Whenever a student would be or would do really good that day, the teacher had set up a large tee-pee with a chair inside and named it Cozy Corner. You were allowed to go inside and read a book of your choosing. Was Where The Wild Things Are out at that time? It might as well have been called My Throne Room because I set up shop there. 2 little girls liked me and I liked them and somehow, when I was picked to go inside, I seemed to always have company wanting to come inside. "Love & Happiness." Sing it, Al Green.Much like Me & CCTP, Love & Basketball visits the days when we, without even knowing what we are experiencing or realizing, find ourselves draw to one person early in life and even with interruptions, that initial meeting with childhood love, if you will, can remain long after the years have rolled on by. Both Sanaa Lathan & Omar Epps provided an excellent flashback for many of us to those days that may not have included sports as the joining mechanism, but when a connection is made, it can be hard to get through, let alone get over. That's the main theme of this movie, and even when you meet someone else, because your early years have not, tainted you, with realities that come later; hopefully much later, but those young visions of perfection that have absolutely nothing to do with 36-24-36 or big hands and big feet, ladies.....well, the latter worked for me, but, but, but, but, my point is: you can still have those young dreams fulfilled, but the correct nurturing of both parents are vital. Hopefully you were able to have both in your home, because as Sanaa Lathan told her mom who thought her not attending her basketball games didn't make a difference, she told her mom, "It mattered, mama." It does.

What a great title. So many people have a passion for both, love and basketball.
I would recommend this movie to almost anyone. The themes are universal. Basketball is played around the world and of course, a lot of people do fall in love in their lives. The cast for this movie is fine. It includes the stunning Sanaa Lathan, Omar Epps, Alfre Woodard, Harry Lennix, Debbie Morgan and others. In cameos are Gabrielle Union and Tyra Banks. I really like the fact that the film is broken into four quarters like a basketball game. The plot consists of two youngsters who live next door to each other and who each love to play basketball and they eventually excel at it to the point where they become college stars and finally pros. Their romantic relationship has its ups and downs throughout but it becomes obvious that they will finally end up together. The scenes on the court are not great because neither actor is actually that athletic but their performances on the court are alright. Their lack of skills does not really take anything away from the film. As most people know, Spike Lee is a great basketball fan and it shows up in this film. If this movie was coming out now, I would run to see it. It is the first movie that Sanaa Lathan really was great in. She was also in "Disappearing Acts" but that was a made for cable movie and not a theatrical release. I think that one of the interesting aspects of the movie is that the families of the two main characters, pressure the characters to explore other options besides basketball even though they are talented athletes. Each star has a parent that tells them that they are not going to make it in pro basketball. Reaching the NBA or WNBA is a one in a million shot, if that.
