Magdalena Bay, the Los Angeles-based duo of Mica Tenenbaum and Matthew Lewin, create magical pop music that floats in the ether of our collective social cosmos. While they call California home, their essence lies in the clouds, emitting unique yet familiar frequencies of synthesized nostalgia, kitschy catchiness, and warped neo-hooks. Suited for the times, Magdalena Bay blends the known and felt with innovative sonic landscapes.Tenenbaum and Lewin met as teenagers in a Miami high school music program. Tenenbaum, who moved from Buenos Aires to Florida at age one, and Lewin, a guitar shredder influenced by his dad's prog and concept rock records, quickly recognized their kindred spirits. They formed a prog band called Tabula Rasa and began a romance. Both were skilled musicians; Tenenbaum a pianist and singer, and Lewin self-taught in production and music theory. Despite attending different colleges, they maintained their band, traveling hours to rehearse before realizing two things: their relationship was undeniable, and prog rock wasn't resonating with young audiences. Shifting their focus to pop, they explored its craft, leading to the creation of Magdalena Bay.They learned the complexities of pop writing and production, striving to create something interesting within the genre. Describing their music broadly as "pop," they released several EPs and singles before debuting their album, "Mercurial World," in 2021. Praised for its melodic hooks and meticulous production, it was often labeled as "synth-pop."Their success is reflected in streaming numbers, social media followers, and festival appearances. Magdalena Bay's stylized online aesthetic complements their music, creating a cohesive artistic vision. Tenenbaum says, "We love extending the world of our music past sound into videos or graphics." Lewin adds, "We're trying to create an atmosphere or an emotional quality with it." This integrated approach, termed "world-building," is central to their artistry.

Simply phenomenal
Easily my favourite album of the ones I heard in 2024, and quite possibly my favourite album of the decade so far. It's just an amazing listen from start to finish.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR
Album of the year by the most underrated, underappreciated band alive today. This vinyl is what perfection looks and sounds like.Been listening to them for 5 plus years and heard every song 1000000+ times - The development of the band is insane album to album.I love them, I really hope more people hear this and give them love as the production on this is and every other song by them is stunning.

Oh My God!
Seriously blown away by this album, and for a 48 year old grump, who often complains about modern pop music not being complicated, I eat my words. This year 2024 has kicked up the dust, giving us some great collections, complete pop albums which have forced a huge sigh of relief from myself. Whether it be the fine, hooky pop simplicity of Billie Eilish’s Hit me Hard and Soft, or the jazz, Carpenters, 70’s lounge music spilling all over Clairo’s Charm, this year has restored my faith in modern music and some!So I was listening to Fantano, reviewing Imaginal Disk, he gave it a glowing 9/10 review and sometimes I go and listen to the album and in this case I did. OH MY GOD!This could be the start of a very intense relationship with a collection of songs and a band who seem to have limitless amounts of inventiveness and musical dexterity. Where to begin… let’s just say, everything about this album is perfection, so full of personality, bass hooks, guitar super fuzz, heavy buzzing synths, angelic ethereal soundscapes, evil Abbaesque catchy lyrics and vocal melodies. The way these songs evolve, never complacent, never dull, make for a multi-layered album which will have you peeling away the layers for years to come.If you do nothing else all year and you’ve given this a listen, then you’ve have a productive year.
