Very easy once the temp is set you only need to push the button you need.

The rough-in in wall piece would be needed to have this work properly with a tub and shower set up. This additional piece would be the 35601000 Rapido Smartbox Universal Rough-in Box.

Hello, the buttons are used for turning the water flow off and on. The volume adjustment is from EcoJoy to Full Flow. Specifically, as stated by Grohe: " SmartControl push for ON-OFF, turn for volume adjustment from EcoJoy to Full Flow " . Hope this helps! Thanks!
